Key points

Updated version of Grandia II featuring improved textures, lighting and shadows, the original Japanese voice option and an additional difficulty level.
An update was released for the Steam version on October 15, 2019 to coincide with Grandia HD Remaster, renaming the game to Grandia II HD Remaster and featuring further changes including improved interface textures, better 16:9 and gamepad support, and French, German, and Japanese language options.
The HD Remaster update removes options present in AE, as well as removes 4:3 support entirely, crops videos to fit 16:9, performs worse, adds aliasing that isn't present in AE, does not fix major issues with Audio/Video/Animation synchronization, and the mouse cursor no longer auto hides itself.[1]
Most updated textures are upscaled with the majority of textures untouched. Text is inconsistently updated, as some is high res and some is low res. Visual comparison here.
Audio files are poor quality with a lower average bitrate compared to previous versions of the game. See HQ Music Mod for a fix.

Essential improvements [edit]

HQ Music Mod [edit]

HQ Music Mod[3]
  1. Download the mod here
  2. If playing with English audio, files will belong in <path-to-game>/Data/Sound
  3. If playing with Japanese audio, files will belong in <path-to-game>/Data/Sound_n
  4. Backup the entire /Sound or /Sound_n folder somewhere. You don't have to, if you need to revert the entire thing, you can just re-verify the files.
  5. Drag and drop the contents of the OGG folder to the /Sound or /Sound_n folder
  6. Refer to the ReadME or download page for additional instructions for noted optional files.

HD Interface Mod [edit]

No longer necessary for Grandia II HD Remaster. This is applicable to Anniversary Edition.
leandroeidi's HD Mod[4]
  1. Download the mod here
  2. Make a backup of your <path-to-game>\data\afs folder. This mod will overwrite many files in there and you should keep a backup to make it possible to undo everything.
  3. Copy the data folder to <path-to-game>

Video [edit]

Graphics feature State Notes
Widescreen resolution 4:3 rendering support has been removed in HD Remaster. All video files have been cropped to 16:9. Roll back to AE for 4:3.
Multi-monitor [5]
Ultra-widescreen [6]
4K Ultra HD [7]
Field of view (FOV)
Windowed Launcher has a list of preset resolutions, starting from "1280x720", to as high as "3840x2160", depending on your monitor. A custom resolution of your choice can also be entered into the resolution box before startup.
Borderless fullscreen windowed Used in place of exclusive fullscreen. This causes performance problems and stuttering.[8]
Anisotropic filtering (AF) Enabled by default. Can be reduced or improved through the graphics card control panel.
Anti-aliasing (AA) Up to 8x MSAA, however mipmap rendering has been changed causing texture aliasing that MSAA can't fix that didn't exist in AE. Visual comparison here (Look at the table cloth and floor boards to the left).
Vertical sync (Vsync) The game relies on DWM for Vsync since it is borderless.[9]
60 FPS and 120+ FPS Field exploration and menus are capped at 30FPS. Battles are capped at 60FPS. The option to switch the game entirely to 30FPS has been removed in HD Remaster. Roll back to AE for 30FPS option.[10]

  2. Open config.ini
  3. Navigate to text_language and set it to 1
  4. Launch Grandia II HD Remaster directly through the executable and not through the launcher. The launcher will change the language back to a non-Japanese option.
