Cheat, Tips and Strategy

Got a cheat or hot tip for this game? Found a secret, or a strategy for success?

If during your Divinity: Original Sin 2 playthrough you feel you have messed up the build of your character you will find it is not that difficult to change them without restarting the game and losing your progress. You will gain unlimited access to respecing via a magic mirror aboard the Lady o' War from Act 2 onward. If you decide to take a brand-new class instead of a basic respec you will need to buy new skills and armor, but even so it will save a lot of time, and it's free to do.

Get into the habit as you progress in the game of clicking on everything you find and speaking to every NPC you meet. There is always the possibility when you interact with an NPC they will give you a quest or just tell you some useful information about the game world. If you click on an NPC, and they are not forth giving to your main hero you should always start a conversation again using another character from your party as there is always a chance things may go differently.

There is no set path to follow in Divinity: Original Sin 2 which can sometimes make it unclear as to what you need to do to progress. The easiest way to figure this out is by paying close attention to the level of enemies you encounter in the quest lines and areas. Basically, the level of enemies you fight should always be the same level as you or slightly below. If you are continually defeated by a particular enemy it is usually an indication that you may have missed a quest or two hidden on the map which you need to find and complete to gain more power before returning.

Make sure as you search the world for valuable items and gold you check all the different types of containers you come across and not just chests. This includes things like wardrobes, barrels, and potion containers. When you do come across something that could potentially contain something of value inside it should be opened with a character in your party that has the Lucky Charm Skill, the higher the level of that skill they have, the greater the chance of finding a better quality item or more gold inside. If you use the Lucky Charm Skill, there is also the possibility of finding a legendary item.

As you explore Fort Joy during the first chapter of Divinity: Original Sin 2 you will come across a NPC black cat that will follow closely behind you. It is important that this black cat escapes Fort Joy with you and is not killed by Magisters. If you escape with Fort Joy with the black cat, you will be able to summon him as a useful partner in future fights as it will have gained the Summon Cat Familiar skill. The key to keeping the black cat alive is to avoid the gate in Fort Joy that is surrounded by Magisters until you have recruited it. The easiest way to escape involves the quest called The Teleporter where you assist a fellow inmate called Garwi who helps you escape with teleportation equipment. After escaping Fort Joy, the black cat will reveal that it used to be a wizard's cat.

Make getting these two items your first two priorities when you begin playing Divinity: Original Sin 2. You will be able to find a free bedroll on the floor of the ship at the beginning of the game and picking it up will not be considered stealing. The bedroll is a consumable and using it will replenish the Health Points of your entire party and both types of armor as well as remove all negative statuses (besides the permanent ones). All the characters in your party will also get a buff that gives them +1 to Strength, Constitution and Intelligence. Make sure you use your bedroll when there are no enemies nearby.

A shovel allows you to dig up hidden treasures or reveal secret passages that can lead you to additional quests and/or characters. However, in order to detect them you need a character with well-developed Wits attribute. You can find a shovel at the start of the game by the destroyed wall near the shore. As you progress in the game, you will be able to purchase additional bedrolls and shovels from many merchants.

It is recommended that you make sure your main character has a high persuasion skill as Divinity: Original Sin 2 involves a lot of dialogue between NPCs, and it will help you achieve potentially more desirable outcomes during dialogue exchanges. These include being able to talk your way out of fights, and into some quests which will enable you to gain more loot. Make sure it is your main character who has the high persuasion as they will be the one doing most of the talking.

Have a High Persuasion Skill

If you are new to Divinity: Original Sin 2 and you are not a big fan of inventory management, which in the case of this game involves looking after four characters and keeping their skills and equipment in order, it is recommended that you set up your character with the Lone Wolf trait when you are creating them. A Lone Wolf gains double the stats when they level up and also gets more actions per turn. Having the Lone Wolf trait also means you can have two characters in your part and not four which cuts down your inventory management by half.

Early in Divinity: Original Sin 2 you will encounter the NPC Griff, who is the racist kitchen cook on Fort Joy. Griff is also the leader of a gang who are involved in some quests you can undertake. Look to take advantage of Griff and his crew by using them to boost your cash, to do this sell items you are not using to Griff and his gang and then when you are stronger return and pick a fight with them. If you then kill the gang members you will be able to loot them for a lot of those items you sold them and sell them again to NPCs you meet with gold in their inventory.
